Two Teens Dead After Head-on Crash in Calcasieu Parish
Two teenagers, an 18-year-old and 17-year-old from DeQuincy, died in a head-on accident on Sunday morning in Calcasieu Parish.
The 18-year-old was driving northbound on Highway 27 just north of Route 66 when he attempted to pass a vehicle in a no passing zone where the highway curved. The driver’s Chevrolet Silverado swiped the side of a southbound utility trailer before crashing head-on with the 17-year-old victim’s pick-up truck.
Both victims were wearing their seatbelts, but were pronounced dead at the scene. One witness said that the 18-year-old driver was speeding and driving aggressively before the accident.
A fourth vehicle was hit by debris from the crash. No one else was injured in the wreck.
Head-on collisions in Louisiana have claimed the lives of at least five others in the past month.
In late January, three people died in another head-on crash on Highway 27 north of Houston River Road. Similarly to the accident over the weekend, a driver crossed the center line in a no passing zone and struck another vehicle head on. Both drivers died in the accident while a passenger in one of the vehicles succumbed to her injuries at a nearby hospital. Authorities believed alcohol may have played role in the collision.
In another head-on collision on Highway 25, two drivers in their 80s were killed when one driver crossed the center line.
More than 80 percent of head-on accidents occur on undivided, two lane rural roads. Unfortunately, when drivers decide to risk passing another vehicle in a no-passing zone, they are putting themselves and others in danger. Drivers should be very cautious when attempting to pass slower vehicles on two lane highways and if possible, should wait until they reach a passing zone to pass another vehicle.
