Thousands of Gallons of Oil Spilled into Louisiana Waterways
In the past two weeks, approximately 9,000 gallons of crude oil have been spilled into Louisiana waterways and marshes in three separate oil spills.
The first spill happened last week when a Hilcorp Energy pipeline spilled between 1,160 and 4,200 gallons of crude oil into Barataria Bay. The spill affects about eight square miles of the bay, including a section of wetlands.
The leak occurred in an abandoned flow line in the Lake Washington oil field, and Hilcorp fixed it immediately after discovering the spill, according to a statement from the company.
Hilcorp has hired the oil spill response organization Environmental Safety and Health to clean up the spill. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the Louisiana Oil Spill Coordinators Office, the U.S. Coast Guard, and the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries will also monitor clean-up operations.
Three days after the Hilcorp spill, a flowline from Texas Petroleum Investment Co. leaked 840 gallons of oil into the Southwest Pass. The flowline is secured and the oil spill response organization Oil Mop placed a containment boom to prevent any more environmental damage.
The most recent spill occurred on Tuesday when an oil well owned by Texas Petroleum Investment Co. leaked approximately 4,200 gallons into the mouth of the Mississippi River. The pipe was immediately secured and a containment boom was used to avoid further damage.
The owner of the well has hired OMI Environmental Solutions and Clean Gulf Associates to handle clean-up operations. The Louisiana Oil Spill Coordinators Office, the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries, and the coast guard will oversee those operations.
