Informed people across the country know how critically important maritime workers are in promoting the nation’s economy and security.

Louisiana residents likely know that as well – if not better – than individuals residing in any other state. Louisiana’s many thousands of maritime employees make contributions that are key to state prosperity and overall betterment.
Spotlighting the entire month as a period for paying tribute to U.S. maritime tradition and industry workers is obviously notable. May’s designation is in tandem with the country’s long-established Maritime Day, which was inaugurated by Congress back in 1933. Maritime Day falls on May 22 this year.
Port NOLA’s recent month-long designation marks the third consecutive citing of May since the port first recognized Maritime Month in 2017. Activities spanning the month will focus on honoring workers and providing maritime-linked education.
Port NOLA President and CEO Brandy D. Christian offered a prepared statement concerning Maritime Month. Among other things, she noted that, “Now more than ever, it is important that we recognize the dedicated men and women in the maritime industry and the work they do every day.”
