Cyclist in Intensive Care After Being Struck by Car
41-year-old Marbin Reyes-Sauzo is in the intensive care unit at Christus St. Patrick Hospital after being hit by a car while riding his bicycle in St. Charles.
On Monday night, Reyes-Sauzo was hit on Highway 14 at Hillcrest. According to police, the driver said she tried to avoid hitting the cyclist.
A witness at the scene said that the bicyclist was riding in circles in the middle of the travel lanes. The officer at the scene thought he smelled alcohol on the cyclist’s breath, but it is too soon to determine if alcohol was a factor in the crash.
Bicyclists are required to adhere to traffic laws, including riding your bike with traffic and stopping at stop signs. Additionally, cyclists are assigned bike lanes; if a motorist is looking to pass a cyclist, they should be passing them with a three feet minimum distance.
Bicycle riders are required to have a white headlight on the front of the bicycle when riding at night. Wearing a helmet, riding with traffic and obeying all traffic laws can save a cyclist’s life.
According to Louisiana accident report data, about 30 percent of fatal bicycle accidents involved a cyclist under the influence in 2013.
