BMW is recalling 573,935 of their popular 3 series vehicles, model years 2000 to 2006, in order to address a defect in the passenger side frontal air bag that could cause the airbag inflator to rupture upon deployment.
The auto manufacturer made the announcement in mid-July, but the exact number of vehicles being recalled in the U.S. was not precisely known. The recall is linked to the safety defect in airbag inflators manufactured by Takata.
The vehicles affected include:
Model year 2000 328i sedan and coupes
2001-2005 325i sedans, coupes, convertibles and sports wagons
2005-2005 325xi sedans and sports wagons
2006 325i coupes and convertibles
2001-2006 330i sedans, coupes, and convertibles
2001-2005 330xi sedans
2001-2006 M3 coupes and convertibles
Excessive internal pressure could cause rupturing of the inflator which could result in metal fragments striking or injuring the passenger seat occupant. BMW is not aware of any injuries caused by this defect.
The company intends to notify owners, and dealers will replace the airbag for free. Owners should expect to receive an initial notice in August 2014 and then a second notice for when the replacement parts are available – likely by October.
