The federal government has called on Volkswagen to recall 500,000 diesel vehicles in the U.S. after the company admitted to using “defeat device” software to cheat on emissions tests.
The world’s largest automaker revealed that software in the vehicles knew when an emissions test was being conducted. Under testing conditions, the device would switch on and limit the amount of nitrogen oxide being released. However, under driving conditions, the switch would remain off. The vehicles were actually emitting 40 times the legal level of chemicals. These chemicals contribute to the creation of the ozone as well as smog.

The company has set aside $7.3 billion to cover the costs of recalls and repairs. Additionally, under the terms of the Clean Air Act, Volkswagen could be fined up to $37,500 per vehicle by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Anyone found responsible for the defeat device could face a fine of $3,750 per violation.
Consumers have expressed their frustration over the company’s wrong-doings. Specifically, those who purchased the vehicles feel they were deceived by Volkswagen. Some have filed lawsuits alleging that the value of their vehicle has depreciated and that they would have never purchased the vehicles knowing what they know now.
Volkswagen will no longer sell the affected 2015 models and will not be introducing its 2016 diesel models to the market.
