5 Cities with the Highest Number of Fatal DUI Accidents
Earlier this year, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration revealed that drunk driving cost the nation $199 billion; these accidents accounted for the largest percentage of total economic loss due to motor vehicle crashes.
A new analysis of where these fatal accidents occurred has clarified where some of the most dangerous cities in America lay. Additionally, the analysis found that the majority of cities where the most fatal alcohol-related car crashes occurred are also where drivers see lower car insurance rate increases after they receive DUIs.
On average, annual car insurance premiums increase after receiving a DUI by 75 percent. However, in cities where a larger number of fatal DUI accidents reported, the increases could be as low as 46 percent.
The cities with the most alcohol-related fatal crashes per capita include:
San Bernardino, Calif. – San Bernardino has the most fatal crashes per capita of any city in the U.S. Between 2010 and 2012 there were 92 fatal crashes involving drunk drivers, however, the city only has a population of 210,000.
Mobile, Ala. – With less than 200,000 residents, Mobile had just under 60 fatal alcohol-related crashes between 2010 and 2012. The number of fatal alcohol-related accidents per capita was about four times the national average. Compared to drivers in other cities, Mobile residents also receive much smaller insurance rate increases after receiving a DUI; their premiums increase by less than 47 percent.
Riverside, Calif. – The second California city on the list is just 14 miles from San Bernardino. Riverside had about three times the number of crashes per capita compared to the national average. However, residents had one of the highest insurance premium increases when compared to other cities. Residents could expect to pay 140 percent more for insurance after they receive a DUI.
Tulsa, Okla. – Although Tulsa is one of the largest cities in Oklahoma, it is only home to about 390,000 residents. The city had 74 fatal alcohol-related accidents between 2010 and 2012. Insurance premium rates were also rather low after receiving a DUI, residents saw an increase of only 42 percent.
Lubbock, Texas – In a city with 230,000 people, a total of 40 fatal alcohol-related accidents were reported. Per capita, this is twice the national average.
In Louisiana, some of the parishes with the highest number of fatal DUI accidents per capita included Sabine and Iberia. The state, overall, reported 273 fatal crashes involving alcohol in 2013, a slight increase since 2011 and 2012.
